Karpathy: Public Only Sees an AI Preview

OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy warns of a growing divide between public perception of artificial intelligence and the advanced capabilities of internal frontier systems.
Karpathy: Public Only Sees an AI Preview

According to The Decoder, AI researcher and OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy stated that the general public has only experienced a preview of true artificial intelligence capabilities. Karpathy outlined a four-tier user base model, noting that roughly 75 percent of the global population has barely interacted with large language models, while casual users largely treat chatbots as advanced search engines or writing assistants.

By contrast, Karpathy estimates that only about 5,000 people globally have access to internal frontier systems. In these environments, AI agents routinely handle complex software projects, cyber operations, and scientific discovery at speeds that would take human experts years to accomplish. This stark capability gap has left human review and comprehension struggling to keep pace.

Karpathy noted that his own workflow changed dramatically, leading him to stop writing code by hand entirely in favor of AI agents. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed a similar sentiment, highlighting instances where modern AI tools complete months of startup development work in mere minutes. Karpathy attributes this rapid progress to reinforcement learning focused on digital, verifiable, and economically valuable domains like coding and mathematics.
