Most Americans Want AI Development Pace Slowed
A new Quinnipiac University poll shows that most Americans want artificial intelligence development to either slow down or stop entirely. According to The Decoder, 47 percent of surveyed adults favor reducing the pace of development, while 30 percent want a complete pause until safety can be verified. Only five percent of respondents expressed a desire for faster progress.
The survey of 1,202 United States adults highlights deep public skepticism toward industry leadership. Roughly 74 percent of participants reported having little or no trust in the leaders of artificial intelligence companies. Additionally, 73 percent expressed concern that artificial intelligence could eventually pose a threat to humanity’s survival.
Public backing for regulatory oversight remains exceptionally high. The poll indicates that 86 percent of respondents support independent safety standards for artificial intelligence companies, even if those measures slow down overall technological progress. Chetan Jaiswal of Quinnipiac University noted that these findings suggest the public wants concrete safeguards that do not rely simply on taking company leaders at their word.
