OpenAI Engineer Arrested Over Surveillance Device
An OpenAI engineer was arrested on October 9 for allegedly concealing an audio recording device inside a leadership conference room at the company, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The Decoder reports that 35-year-old Saudi national Abdulrahman Alfozan allegedly wrapped the device in toilet paper and placed it in a television USB port within a room used for confidential strategy discussions. A second recording device was discovered in his bag.
According to the indictment cited by The Decoder, Alfozan used a chatbot account linked to his wife to develop the surveillance hardware. Between September 24 and 30, the account received prompts detailing how to construct a continuous audio recorder, optimize live listening, and encrypt an SD card. The prompts even referenced the MAC address of the recovered hardware, a process colloquially known as vibe-coding spy equipment.
OpenAI stated that there are no indications the individual inappropriately accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee has since been fired. FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized that safeguarding American artificial intelligence innovations remains a top counterintelligence priority. If convicted, Alfozan faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The incident highlights intersecting vulnerabilities as artificial intelligence infrastructure draws closer ties between developers and foreign states.
