OpenAI Launches GPT-6 Sol and Luna with Cut Prices
According to The Decoder, OpenAI has expanded its model lineup with the introduction of GPT-6 Sol and Luna, two lower-cost models that match the performance of their predecessors at half the token price. The release cuts prices by 50 percent compared to the GPT-5.6 versions, positioning the company to compete directly with lower-cost open-weight alternatives and rival select offerings from Anthropic.
GPT-6 Sol is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, while Luna is available at $0.10 for input and $0.50 for output. OpenAI attributes the price reductions to improvements in inference and caching. Additionally, the company updated prompt caching to offer a 90 percent discount on cached input tokens, supported by a new dashboard and diagnostics tools for developers.
Independent evaluations by Artificial Analysis indicate that while per-task costs drop significantly, overall intelligence scores remain largely at GPT-5.6 levels, showing minor gains in specific areas alongside regressions in others, such as knowledge work benchmarks like GDPval-AA v2.1. At launch, the models are rolling out across ChatGPT and the API for various subscriber tiers, targeting recurring complex tasks and high-volume well-defined workflows.
